How To Stand Strong When Life Gets Tough

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. Isaiah 43:2 (NKJV).

Let's be honest, scrolling through social media or flipping through the news, it often feels like the world is on fire. Whether it's cultural clashes, political divides, or just the everyday pressures of life, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. For those of us striving to live out our faith, it can feel like we're constantly facing an uphill battle, buffeted by opposition simply for standing for what we believe.

Maybe you've felt judged, rejected, or unfair criticism just for living out your convictions. It's in these moments that despair can try to creep in, whispering doubts about whether your efforts even matter. But here's the powerful truth: what you're doing has a future, and your labor in the Lord is never in vain. It is purposeful, and it is eternal.

God never promised us a life free from challenges. In fact, He told us to expect difficulties, trials, and adversaries. Think about it: Jesus himself said, In this world you will have trouble, John 16:33. He didn't promise an absence of storms, but He did promise His unwavering presence and protection through them.

This changes everything, doesn't it? It helps us understand why James, in the early church, wrote, Count it all joy when you encounter various trials, James 1:2. He wasn't suggesting we enjoy suffering, but rather that we recognize the immense spiritual growth and strengthening that can come from enduring hardships with God by our side.

Consider the incredible story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. We often focus on their miraculous deliverance from the fiery furnace, and rightly so! But before they stepped into those flames, they faced so much pressure. They were condemned, rejected, and falsely accused simply because they refused to compromise their faith and bow down to an idol. They endured hatred and opposition because they stood firm in their convictions.

Their story reminds us that living a godly life often means standing against the current. It means being willing to say "no" when the world says "yes" to things that go against God's Word. And yes, it can mean facing condemnation and opposition.

The Apostle Paul, no stranger to hardship, reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:17, For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. What we face today, however difficult, is temporary. It's working something profound and lasting within us.

You might have adversaries on every side, but remember this profound truth from Romans 8:3 says, in the midst of it all, you are more than a conqueror. And as 2 Timothy 3:12 plainly states, Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. This isn't a threat; it's a reality check that encourages us to build our faith on a solid foundation.

So, when the pressures mount and the world feels like it's closing in, fix your eyes on the future and on His glory. Refuse to be distracted by the temporary challenges you face. Be confident that no matter what comes your way, His Word will prevail in your life, and His glory will always be revealed in and through you.

What "light and momentary affliction" are you facing today, and how can you lean into God's presence to find joy and strength in it?
